Modern American Canasta includes several significant penalties for failing to complete certain objectives or for holding specific cards at the end of a hand. Canasta Junction automatically applies these penalties to your team's score.
Here are the most important ones to know:
Incomplete "Special" Canastas. This is the most severe penalty. If your team starts a meld of Aces or 7s but fails to complete the canasta before the hand ends, you will be penalized heavily.
- Incomplete Natural Aces Canasta: -2500 points.
- Incomplete 7s Canasta: -2500 points.
Incomplete Wild Card Canasta: -2000 points.
Note: There is no penalty for an incomplete "dirty" (mixed) Aces canasta.
Holding Too Many Aces or 7s. If the hand ends and a player is caught with three or more Aces or three or more 7s still in their hand, the team is penalized.
- Holding three or more Aces: -1500 points.
Holding three or more 7s: -1500 points.
Note: If a player holds both three Aces AND three 7s, the penalty is doubled.
Mis-meld Penalty: If you attempt to make an initial meld but do not have enough points or are missing a clean triple, you must pick up your cards. In a physical game, this results in a 10-point penalty added to your meld requirement (e.g., needing 135 instead of 125). Canasta Junction helps you avoid this by preventing illegal melds in the first place.
