In Modern American Canasta, each card has a specific point value used for calculating your initial meld score and for the final count at the end of a hand. Unlike many other card games, the suits (hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades) are irrelevant.
Here are the values for each card:
- Joker: 50 points
- 2 (Deuce): 20 points
- Ace: 20 points
- 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King: 10 points
- 4, 5, 6, 7: 5 points
- 3: 5 points (but they are scored differently and are not used in melds, see "How are 3s scored?")
Jokers and 2s are also wild cards, meaning they can substitute for any other card in a meld (except for a meld of 7s).
