The primary goal in Modern American Canasta is for your team to score 8500 points before the opposing team does. You score points by creating "melds," which are sets of three or more cards of the same rank (e.g., three Kings, four 8s).
The most valuable melds are "canastas," which are sets of seven cards of the same rank.
- A natural canasta (or "clean" canasta) contains seven natural cards of the same rank with no wild cards (Jokers or 2s).
- A dirty canasta (or "mixed" canasta) contains a mix of natural cards and up to two wild cards.
A hand ends when a player "goes out" after their team has completed at least two canastas, or when the draw pile runs out of cards.
